Our Story
Growing minds, growing bodies...
It all started with a phone call... "I'm pregnant", said Laura. "I'm crying", said Dina (soon to be Auntie DeDee). So began the World's Greatest Addiction to Children's Clothing and Toys! With several years of difficult research- shopping in the trenches of every children's boutique...giving up precious vacation time to duck in and out of the children's stores of San Francisco, Manhattan, Los Angeles (even Milwaukee for goodness sake)- we can now claim expert status. Two children later (plus a couple more nieces and nephews)- we've decided to put all that knowledge to use. When she realized that she had turned shopping for her children into an occupation- Laura came up with the idea of an online retailer After deciding that it wasn't totally crazy to enter into an industry we knew nothing about (even if we did have A LOT of experience on the consumer end of things)- we did it. We wanted to put something together which not only provided quality products- but one that helped our consumers make great choices for their children. We know you worry about their development...so do we. We know how cute you want them to look....and TRUST US....we know you don't want it to cost an arm and a leg!
We shamelessly put our family members to work. With promises of discounts, our mother and a sister, both of whom are trained in Early Childhood Education, put together information about the age appropriateness of our toys. Our neighbors have lugged countless boxes and looked at volumes of catalogs...""Would you buy this? What about this???" With the help of all- we are here...clothing and toys abound...now we just need you. Your input is important, too. If you have a question about a product or if you'd like our advice on a gift, even if you just want to know if an outfit is as cute in person as it is in the pics- just shoot us an email or give us a call. What's in a name?
So what about the real question? Who or what is Potato Ears? To understand that, you have to know that we had the best grandparents kids could have. You know the kind- you see them on TV and think it couldn't be real. Our grandfather passed away in December 2005- right around the time we were coming up with the idea of the store. He was the grandfather who visited all the time...he showed up with candy (kids love that, right?)...had a special knock (just so we'd know it was him....of course we were pantingly waiting on the other side of the door- poised to open and rush into his arms!)...and before he could leave at night, he and our grandmother had to pile all 5 kids in the car for a drive "around the block"! Every time we saw him- he'd "slip" us some cash...a quarter when we were little, a dollar when in high school, TEN when we were in college. Even as college grads, with families and incomes of our own- the last thing he'd say to us when he left was "Do you need anything?". We loved him, and the great grand-children adored him. Well, he was "Potato Ears". From the time we were kids- he called us "Rabbit Ears", and we called him "Potato Ears"- no one really knows how it started- it's just one of those things that happen in families. When we were trying to come up with a name for our store- it just all came together...so here we are...Potato Ears. We hope it can mean something to you- cause it really means a lot to us!
